Meet David Sundberg
This is our winemaker, David Sundberg. He’s not one for stepping into the spotlight or being the center of attention in any way. Truth is, we love his wine and think it’s time to shine some light on him. Wine has been his passion since his early days at Fresno State, where he earned his degree in Enology. Since joining our team in 2015, he has not only been growing our wine portfolio, but taken our latest vintages to award winning levels. David and the rest of us are thrilled about the upcoming release of our first Fountaingrove District AVA designated 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon. Enjoy a sneak peak of the beautiful label (at the bottom of this email)—an ode to the vintage D-8 bulldozer that owner, Lyall Fahden, used to protect the property during the 2017 Tubbs Fire. Besides being a dynamic winemaker, David is one awesome dude, dad, husband and human. We put him on the spot with a fun round of questions—keep reading to find out more about him!
Where did you grow up?
HB aka Huntington Beach
What makes you a good winemaker?
I like to say I’m a practical winemaker, but moreover, I think what makes me good at it is my love of flavor. I really like being able to coax flavors from the wine as it evolves.
What’s your favorite dish to cook for your family? What HF wine would you pair with it?
This is a hard question to answer, I love to cook and make everything from scratch. Everyone in the family has their own favorite—My son Cameron loves falafels, my other Son, Sawyer, loves Mac ‘n Cheese. I love to cook with the season and what my wife, Carla, has growing in the garden… right now its grilled shishito and padron peppers with a little fresh lemon and salt, ratatouille, and cast-iron grass-fed rib eye, which I would pair our 2014 Estate Cabernet or 2015 Malbec.
When you’re not at home or work where would we most likely find you?
Very rare these days! My best friend and I like to go for early evening appetizers and drinks at Bird & The Bottle in Santa Rosa.
If you could only drink one varietal of wine for the rest of your life what would it be?
Haha! I can’t answer that!
What’s your favorite 90’s jam?
I love music, so this is a loaded question. I was actually a DJ in the 90’s for 4 ½ years while in college… so difficult to answer, but if I can only pick one it is “Tank” by The Seatbelts.
Leave it to David to stump us with his 90’s song choice…we had no idea who the Seatbelts are and had to look this song up, you can click here to listen— prepare to be transported to a James Bond movie intro!
David will be here to pour wine and visit at our upcoming Fall Wine Release/Pick Up Party on October 27th, we hope to see you there! Stay tuned for more details on the party.
